How Does IPL Pigmentation Work?

IPL Laser Skin Rejuvenation is a non-invasive, efficient method for minimising hyperpigmentation.

Short for Intense Pulsed Light, IPL uses concentrated light pulses to penetrate beneath the skin, directly targeting melanin. The heat breaks down pigment into tiny particles, which the body naturally processes by either bringing them to the skin’s surface as small scabs or removing them through the lymphatic system.

The treatment is generally comfortable and requires no downtime, offering an effective solution for a clearer complexion.

What to Expect? | FAQ IPL Pigmentation

The number of treatments needed varies depending on the severity of your skin’s pigmentation. On average, 6-8 sessions are recommended, followed by an evaluation to assess your progress. Some individuals may see desired results after this, while others with more persistent pigmentation may require additional treatments.

We recommend starting with a “test patch” to confirm your suitability for the treatment and gauge potential outcomes. Sessions are typically scheduled every two weeks. It’s advised to avoid fragranced products for at least three days before treatment, and to protect your skin by staying out of the sun and wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to prevent further pigmentation damage.

After the treatment, there is no downtime, and you can resume normal activities. It’s common to experience mild redness immediately after, which typically fades within a few hours. Additionally, you may notice a light, grazed appearance on the skin as the pigmentation rises to the surface, which can last up to two weeks. During this time, avoid picking or exfoliating the treated area.

IPL Pigmentation Treatment is ideal for individuals who have uneven skin tone or pigmentation concerns such as sun spots, age spots, or melasma. It is suitable for most skin types, especially those with fair to medium skin tones.

Those who are looking for a non-invasive solution with minimal downtime to improve the appearance of their skin may benefit from this treatment.

However, it is not recommended for individuals with very dark skin tones or active skin conditions like eczema or rosacea. A consultation with a skin specialist can help determine if IPL is the right treatment based on your skin’s unique needs and goals.

IPL Pigmentation Treatment is generally well-tolerated and causes minimal discomfort. During the procedure, you may feel a slight snapping or tingling sensation as the light pulses penetrate the skin, similar to the feeling of a rubber band lightly snapping against the skin.

This sensation is brief and typically fades quickly. For those with more sensitive skin, a cooling gel may be applied to help minimise any discomfort.

Most clients find the treatment relatively pain-free and can return to their normal activities immediately after, with no significant recovery time required.

While IPL Pigmentation Treatment is generally safe, some individuals may experience mild side effects. These can include:

  • Redness or irritation: Mild redness or swelling can occur immediately after treatment, similar to a light sunburn, but usually subsides within a few hours.
  • Pigment darkening: Treated areas may temporarily darken before the pigment breaks down and fades.
  • Scabbing or crusting: In some cases, small scabs may form as the body naturally expels broken-down pigment. These should not be picked at.
  • Sensitivity: Some people may experience heightened sensitivity to sun exposure post-treatment, making it crucial to use sunscreen.
  • Blistering or hyperpigmentation: Although rare, some individuals may develop blisters or darker pigmentation if the treatment is not properly tailored to their skin type or aftercare instructions are not followed.

It’s important to follow aftercare guidelines and consult with a professional if any unusual or persistent side effects occur.
